Evaluating other student blogs
Whiles looking at the successes criteria, I think this music video would be a level 4, as they have completed good mise en scene, in terms of the artists facial make up, goes well the look of a rock star, as well as his hair styled the way they have chosen, this all goes with there chosen style, being a performance/concept music video. They also used fast pace editing, this allowed the video to flow. Further they used a variety of angles, such as long shot, high angles, low angles and extreme close ups.
Looking at the success criteria I would give this a level 2, good song choice and various different shots such as extreme close ups, long shots, and mid shots, however in some of the shots, the camera work has let them down, as they've cut out shoulders in the frame. Moreover the editing has is well crafted as its fast and links in with the fast speed of the song. However the reason I didn't say it is a level three, is because they don't add a lot of lip-syncing, where they have added some lip-syncing, this is only for a few seconds and then the shot immediately changes. The characters/ artists in the music video don't seem convincing as artists, they seem more of lovers in a music video, which they have acted out well, they convince an audience that they are a real couple.
I would give this a level 4, as they have taken a song and made created a juxtaposition with it, by making it the opposite to a 'perfect day'. Further the plan and simple setting they have chosen has worked because of the camera work, such as the above angles and long shots. The characters in the music videos, come across as convincing artists, the girl in the music video completed the lip syncing task well. I would say this is a finished piece. Lastly the editing of the music video came out well, as they didn't try to use many effects or make the video fast, it was mainly the filming and the good acting, setting which made it a good music video.

Ideas of locations;

Britney Spears Practice
The part which I found difficult when producing the Britney Spears video, is the lip syncing part, to get a character to be in time with the original voice to make it more realistic. Furthermore the choreography routines had to be correct; also everyone dancing had to be in time with each other, meaning I had to retake the dance. Moreover videoing was fun and great practice.
Videos which suggest the 'Male Gaze' theory
Laura Mulvey believed that men have power over women, "Gaze theory". Furthermore she said women are seen as objects. However she also did look at the 'Male gaze' in different aspects, as she says in some situations women want people to look at them, however males then can tend to see women as an object.

In this video Kylie Minogue is the 'male gaze', she wears hot pants which show her bum and body on show, leading to male attention. Furthermore she has hr hair down curly, making her look dolled up. However she is in control throughout the video.
2.) Do you believe that women 'experience the text's narrative secondarily?'
I believe that women do experience the text's narrative secondarily, as they are constantly viewed at by men, judged and looked at all the time, how ever I also believe that men can be seen as objects by females.
3.) Does this help with the continuation of sexism?/ Does this suggest that the music industry is corrupt and filled by sexism?
I think music is an element of sexism, possibly a big one for the younger generation, as some may be influenced easily. Furthermore music videos are watched by many, which makes it seem as if its okay for women to be seen as 'male gaze'. However there can be a 'female gaze' women may see a female in a video and admire their figure.
4.) Do you think women play on this stereotype?/why?
Some females may just enjoy the attention in a positive way. Some may have a lack of confidence about self imagine, playing a role may help them to bring their confidence up.
In this video the audience analyzing would expect it to be consistent female control 'Girls we run this, Who run the world? Girls', however the video shows a woman laying on an object in surrounded by a desert, then Beyonce with the female dancers, dressed in suspenders, suggesting there may be 'male gaze'. In addition to this at the end of the video the women salute the males, after the lyrics 'who run the world? Girls' the action to salute may collide with the lyrics.

She doesn't wear clothing which reveals any her shape.

In this video I like the angles that are used also the editing used,inspired me to use some on our video, the way it fast forwards with the public moving and the girl is still.
This video gave me the idea of putting lyrics into letters, to fill up gaps between filming.
I like the variety of locations that they have chosen, it gives of an vintage and modern theme.

The use of an adults voice with a child lip-singing adds humor to the video, also by having the children have the same props e.g glasses as the adult characters could make the audience laugh. Furthermore by having a park with their instruments in there makes the video unique and more interesting, which then engages the audience. I also like how the video narrative is clear, and the lyrics link well with what is going on in the video, also with a hints of performance it is narrowed down to one type of genre. In all three chosen pitches there is a use of lip singing throughout, also uses of instruments such as the guitar, adding a use of objects in a music video. Furthermore need to make sure the visuals match the lyrics, also the genre has to music match 'mise en scene.

Essay on two music videos
Video A
Video B
I have chosen to analyse a music video A which is called ‘Run the world’ sung by the American singer Beyonce Knowles along with the music video B which is called ‘Picking up the pieces’ sung by a British singer Paloma Faith. Video A featuring Beyonce is directed by Francis Lawrence. Video B is directed by Emil Nava. The genre of video A is a mixture of different genres, can be seen as a club beat as it has a dance feel beat, the music video is a performance where the artist is the centre of attention and there are always dancers beside Beyonce, this is seen almost throughout the video. At the beginning of the video there is a part which is concept based, which may confuse the audience. However it is still relevant to the music video, as the performance fills the gaps of any confusion that may occur from the concept parts of the video. However in comparison to video B, this video is more of a genre of soul and pop combined, which then leads the video to being a narrative. The narrative represents a man and a woman (Paloma) who are having issues in their relationship, as Paloma plays the character of the women who is paranoid about being a perfect woman in the man’s eyes. Overall in both videos A&B the genre conventions have a mixture of different types, these are represented through Beyone having different cultures in her also Paloma having a historic British theme with a soul pop song.
The relationship between the song and the lyrics in video A are amplified in a sense that Beyonce is in the centre of the girls and she is the leader of them. However altogether they ‘Run the world’ more than the men do, a sense of power for the women having dominance this is suggested through the scene where the women have one arm in the air and their dancing to the beat. Furthermore this shows that the video is relevant throughout.
In comparison to video B the video amplifies the lyrics and contradicts with the lyrics, as the video doesn’t produce exactly what the lyrics say, the audience have to really focus to discover the real narrative. However in the scene of the man in the suit, sitting by the fire “Are we the smoke without the fire?” illustrates the visual with the lyric, by having the fire place lit up in the background. In the lyric “now she’s gone” it doesn’t appear to be explicit in the music video to whom gone. This then makes the relationship between the music video and the lyrics seem apart however it makes them emphasised also. The relationship between the music and visuals in Video A, the beat at the start goes with the movement of swiping hair and the slow movement of the horse. Then when the music begins “who runs this Murtha” goes with the body movement of Beyonce moving her shoulders. The scene of the burning car with Beyonce costume goes along with the foot movement and beat of the music along with the lyric “we can devour”. Furthermore the dance is in time with the dance throughout the dance scenes, moving at an equal pace. The instrumental beat is being played live making it in tune with the dance at all tines. Moreover in video B the relationship between the music and visuals are very different to video A has its vocally focused and video A focuses on putting through the lyrics through the dance, of showing girls run the world. On the other hand the narrative in video B is fragmented as there isn’t a clear story, it’s almost for the audience to figure out, which is difficult therefore it allows the audience to have different interpretations and makes it interesting to watch as a music video.
The audience of video A are for fans of Beyonce and young adults and children who may aspire to her, in addition the video may be for dancers and other solo artists. Video B is for females and males who enjoy Paloma Faiths music and lyrics; the music video allows fans to be able to listen to it with a visual storyline added. In addition the audience may also be for females who may admire Paloma Faiths style. Video A and B could be for all ages as they both could relate to anyone, also video B has a narrative, which allows the audience to understand the song further.
In video A culture is represented through the ‘tofo tofo dancers’ to bring a different genre through their different interest in music to the song itself as well as the video. By this Beyonce has added an African culture within her dance. This may be the main selling point of this music video.
The motifs of the artist Beyonce in video A are that she always has dancers in any of her more up beat songs, which allow her to be in the centre, in comparison to the artist Paloma in video B, the motif is her dark ginger hair and dark lipstick, the hairstyles she has of quiff hair styles, furthermore she usually has a vintage 60’s theme to her videos, which is shown in this video through the lady suit that she wears, also what the setting of the olden looking hotel building, furthermore the use of the less modern car makes it have a 60’s feel. This video helps to sell her voice as the video focuses on her and the style of her video is very similar to her other music videos. In video A the video sells Beyonce’s new album through the dance choreograph chosen, Beyonce specially found Tofo Tofo who are dance group from Mozambique to be in her video. Moreover by having this video it relates to some of her other music videos where she has a dance routine throughout, for example ‘single ladies’ and ‘diva’. Suggesting that Beyonce enjoys creating music videos, which have dance routines in them, allowing the video to be more entertaining for the audience.
The representation of Beyonce to her fans may be how much she has done for herself music wise creating more than 3 albums since 2003, also how hardworking she is, furthermore the time she puts into her music. The representation of Paloma Faith may be to people looking to be British solo artists just like her.
Video A uses medium shots at the start for example when Beyonce is on a horse on a dessert Island, this shows detail, and furthermore there are uses of long shots to show Beyonce and the dancers. Whereas video B shows each camera angle and lens focusing on the artist Paloma which then compliments her, also in portraying how her character feels throughout the video. There are also medium shots for example when she is sitting at the bench outside, also when she is sitting at the dressing a table looking in the mirror. In addition to this another medium shot is used to show the man at sitting by the fireplace, showing less light which then brings out the lit up fire. Furthermore over the shoulder shot is used when the servants are walking towards the dining room. In video B there are other camera shots such as an extreme close up, where the man is shaving his beard. The lighting of video A is dark like a shadow over the camera, furthermore there’s a fast movement where the camera which’s face to face in the dinning room scene. Also cross cutting is used to show different parts in one scene at a quick pace.
The sexual display in video A is of Beyonce is where she’s wearing a yellow dress which has a slit in it buy showing her legs whiles dancing, which also could relate to her previous videos for example ‘dance for you’ and ‘single ladies’ where she shows her legs when dancing, this may be to sell her music to men and not just women. In comparison to video B there aren’t really any sexual displays; however Paloma does wear tight dresses which show off her figure, which could be seen as a small amount of sexual display, in addition to this by having dark lipstick this may represent a sexual display. These features may have been chosen to sell the artists albums however to also show their talents and styles.
The videos A and B are both successful in a sense that they make made it onto most television, furthermore they are replayed on the radio and people download the songs after watching the video, for video B the video makes the lyrics more understandable to the audience. Furthermore for video B it allows the lyrics to be more realistic.

The motifs of the artist Beyonce in video A are that she always has dancers in any of her more up beat songs, which allow her to be in the centre, in comparison to the artist Paloma in video B, the motif is her dark ginger hair and dark lipstick, the hairstyles she has of quiff hair styles, furthermore she usually has a vintage 60’s theme to her videos, which is shown in this video through the lady suit that she wears, also what the setting of the olden looking hotel building, furthermore the use of the less modern car makes it have a 60’s feel. This video helps to sell her voice as the video focuses on her and the style of her video is very similar to her other music videos. In video A the video sells Beyonce’s new album through the dance choreograph chosen, Beyonce specially found Tofo Tofo who are dance group from Mozambique to be in her video. Moreover by having this video it relates to some of her other music videos where she has a dance routine throughout, for example ‘single ladies’ and ‘diva’. Suggesting that Beyonce enjoys creating music videos, which have dance routines in them, allowing the video to be more entertaining for the audience.
The representation of Beyonce to her fans may be how much she has done for herself music wise creating more than 3 albums since 2003, also how hardworking she is, furthermore the time she puts into her music. The representation of Paloma Faith may be to people looking to be British solo artists just like her.
Video A uses medium shots at the start for example when Beyonce is on a horse on a dessert Island, this shows detail, and furthermore there are uses of long shots to show Beyonce and the dancers. Whereas video B shows each camera angle and lens focusing on the artist Paloma which then compliments her, also in portraying how her character feels throughout the video. There are also medium shots for example when she is sitting at the bench outside, also when she is sitting at the dressing a table looking in the mirror. In addition to this another medium shot is used to show the man at sitting by the fireplace, showing less light which then brings out the lit up fire. Furthermore over the shoulder shot is used when the servants are walking towards the dining room. In video B there are other camera shots such as an extreme close up, where the man is shaving his beard. The lighting of video A is dark like a shadow over the camera, furthermore there’s a fast movement where the camera which’s face to face in the dinning room scene. Also cross cutting is used to show different parts in one scene at a quick pace.
The sexual display in video A is of Beyonce is where she’s wearing a yellow dress which has a slit in it buy showing her legs whiles dancing, which also could relate to her previous videos for example ‘dance for you’ and ‘single ladies’ where she shows her legs when dancing, this may be to sell her music to men and not just women. In comparison to video B there aren’t really any sexual displays; however Paloma does wear tight dresses which show off her figure, which could be seen as a small amount of sexual display, in addition to this by having dark lipstick this may represent a sexual display. These features may have been chosen to sell the artists albums however to also show their talents and styles.
The videos A and B are both successful in a sense that they make made it onto most television, furthermore they are replayed on the radio and people download the songs after watching the video, for video B the video makes the lyrics more understandable to the audience. Furthermore for video B it allows the lyrics to be more realistic.

The video is aimed at possibly teenager and the artist’s fans both female and male. The purpose of this video is to entertain and to advertise the video, the video captures the audience through the lighting which is bright, then when in the setting of the prison setting it is dark then there is light shining through the window at the end of the cell, the setting of the video is at a prison, the artist receives a telephone call whiles in there linking to the lyrics and the song name suggesting relevance. The artist wears dark clothes for example the leather jacket which has spike studs on the shoulders,coke cans as rollers, furthermore the make up is heavy and she wears dark lipstick, also in some parts of the video the clothing is revealing for example she wears bra and knickers whiles dancing and singing, the other characters in the video wear dark clothes throughout and this may be to match with the artist and the setting of the prison.
In the video we can see that the way the artist is dressed is how she represents herself in other music videos, as she is known for her extreme outfits, clothing, and hair and make up. Furthermore this is supported through the props that are also used in the video, for example there are black sunglasses covered in lit up cigarettes, also we see the artist with knee high boots which have studs on them, representing her look, which makes her stand out and noticed by the audience.
The camera angles show us the location the video takes place, there is a close up on the barb wire of the walls of the outside of the prison, to show it is a prison, also there are close ups on the prison bars to show settings. The style is concept as the video is very abstract throughout there video there is use of close ups and long shots at a fast pace.
The pace is a fast pace this could represent the scene prison is somewhere you have to be careful and fast. Also the theme of the video, prison and a telephone has to be at a fast pace, the rule of not being able to be on the phone constantly.
The genre of the video is pop rock, CGI is used in the video by the use of the black and white filming on the CCTV television shown in a scene in the music video shows these, also the effects to make it more realistic.
Choose Two Different Music Videos
Video one, the genre is pop soul. In this modern video one artist is sitting at a piano, which can capture the audience in a sense that the audience would have a calm feeling whiles listening to it because of the medium pace of the song. The audience would be young adults and adults, possibly more females than males. It's not really a dancing song, which then allows the audience to focus on listening to the lyrics whiles watching the video. The video is created like a stage performance and gives off a concept, as there is an abstract middle part to it, were there are dissolving images of the female artist,almost connecting to the lyrics . The setting of the video takes place in an industrial warehouse shown by the extreme long shot, which shows the artist walking to the piano and the drummer, almost as if its like a stage setting. The song starts when artist starts playing the piano. Also the use of a birds eye view shows the artist and drummer, showing that there alone in the whole room. Furthermore there is a close up camera angle to show the artists face, then an extreme close up on the artists hands whiles she plays the piano, this all makes it very realistic, adds a connection with the audience. Camera cuts from the drummer to the artist through video in a fast pace while the song is a medium pace. The long shots of the empty room could show how lyrics want to fill out the space ‘Next to me’ suggesting they are relevant.
Video two, the genre is pop soul. There are two artists, one playing an instrument (Piano) another singing and performing in some parts, a long shot is used to show the setting which is in a park or field next to a famous London bridge. The audience would be both male and female, young adults and adults, as it has lyrics that people can sing along to also the beat can allow the audience to dance along. The Camera cuts to the female artist, camera is a medium shot of the girl dancing, suggesting a performance because its not just one scene, as camera cuts from male artist to female artist throughout video.
The extreme long shot shows that shows people walking around, then the camera zooms further going backwards, however getting closer to the artist making it abstract. The setting of video two is abstract at the start making it a concept, however in the second half of the video its more of a performance as there is a piano, which you would have on a stage, also there is the female artist who sings an dances, giving it a performance feel. In comparison to video two they both use the instrument, the piano which gives it a relaxing feeling.

When I was younger I grew up listening to the music my parents would listen to, this would be Whitney Huston, I still love her music now, it makes you want to sing along even if you know you don't have the best voice (laughs).
Furthermore when I became more interested in music, I bought my first CD player, which led me to buy my first CD which was by the music artist Akon.
I used to like this song because I love dancing and I used to jump up and down on my bed on a Saturday morning and just dance to it, I enjoyed the song during winter and summer, there was no season for it. Now I tend to enjoy different genres of music, I wouldn't say I stick to one genre, my favourite song seems to change almost every week as I grow up, also new songs come out more often now a days.
I like all the songs above at the moment, because there always played and there calm songs which are catchy, which just makes me sing along to them, whether I'm walking or taking a seat relaxing. Also some of these songs tell a story, which I like.There are many more song I enjoy. The song which stands out for me is paradise as its by a bad and I never used to really enjoy band music when I was younger, but their song just puts a smile on my face and reminds me of hot weather. For me music is a therapy, it takes me to a place of silence in a sense, makes me feel happy and relaxed. I say music makes things better if your feeling down. And I think music plays a big part in life as it can sometimes describe you as a person or what you enjoy.

Today we listened to a song called 'No Rest-Dry The River', we listened to this song with our eyes closed, we had to try to imagine what was happening in the music video also who would be in the music video for example a women and a man or a band, then we looked at the lyrics of the song (shown below) to try to make out what the song was about. I came up with thoughts of a man and a women breaking up, and flash backs of a relationship falling apart, also happy memories of a happy couple. Furthermore a sense of nostalgia.
